MSI GT628 with GeForce 160M and Linux Hybrid Graphics DSDT information

MSI GT628 Gaming Laptop ImageWith the growing market for mobile gaming computers, there are many computer makers which have joined the bandwagon in an attempt to tap the lucrative market that consists of hard-core gamers and mobile users.

One of the most popular manufacturers of mobile gaming computers is MSI which has focused on creating portable gaming devices. Meanwhile, its most recent product is the GT628 that features multimedia functions and technologies that will meet the needs of hard-core gamers today.

This laptop features the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 160M with 1GB GDDR3 VRAM which is almost twice as faster compared to its predecessor GeForce 9700M GT. With this chip, the computer can provide reliable support for gaming technologies and other multimedia functions while offering impressive 3D graphics.

According to vice president of MSI sales Andy Tung, the company chose the chip for its new laptop since it can provide game-caliber performance that has never been attained by most notebook models.

To provide faster performance, the GeForce GTX 160M has also been integrated with the latest Intel Centrino 2 processor and MSI’s unique technology called Turbo Drive Engine which increases the clock rate (computer’s overall performance) by enhancing the speed of RAM, video, card, and chipsets.

Another notable feature is the 15.4-inch LCD widescreen display which can support images which come in 1680 x 1050 resolutions. Not only built for gamers, this screen displays vibrant images since it has PureVideo High Definition (HD) Technology that will allow users to watch HD and Blu-ray movies.

Other features are 7.1ch Dolby Certified Audio which can support impressive sound quality; built-in 2-pixel camera; 802.11n WiFi connection for fast Internet access; Bluetooth Technology for wireless digital transfer; 320GB 7200RPM Hard Drive; HDMI output; Eco Engine Technology and NVIDIA’s HybridPower technology that allows users to minimize the power consumption of the computer.

According to MSI, the GT628 will be made available in the US market in mid April. Meanwhile, the company did not disclose the price of this gaming mobile computer.

DSDT is an acronym for Differentiated System Description Table. This table contains the Differentiated Definition Block, which supplies the information and configuration information about the base system. It is always inserted into the ACPI Namespace by the OS at boot time.

If you've got a laptop with a IGP and a hybrid Nvidia or ATi card, and you have tried to use Linux on it, you may have noticed that there are issues with the hybrid graphics setup. To help improve the Linux hybrid graphics support for this laptop, please attach your DSDT information to this Launchpad bug report specifying your laptop model:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756

To compile your DSDT information, install if you haven't already the acpidump and iasl tools:
sudo apt-get install acpidump iasl           # on Debian-based systems

Then run the following commands:

sudo acpidump > acpidump.txt
sudo acpixtract acpidump.txt
iasl -d
DSDT.dat

This will create a DSDT.dsl file that you can attach to the bug report. This information will allow the developers to fully implement the hybrid graphics features for Linux.
